Fantasy Flight Games: Netrunner Thumbnail

Fantasy Flight Games: Netrunner

At some point last year, Mike Hamlett was hip-deep in some work for me and he'd gotten notified about Fantasy Flight Games putting out a call for art for their upcoming Netrunner game. He let me know that they were looking for illustrators and it just so happens that, well, I had some illustrators that were available. I have to admit - I've known of FFG for quite a while, even played some of their games, but I'd never had much contact with the company since I'm not a painter and they tend to only use fully painted artwork. But, it happened that the artwork for their new game was being approached with more of a comic style (basically meaning that they were using some lines as opposed to fully rendered paintings without lines). I immediately contacted them and squared away some

One of the projects that we took on before work began on The Mortal Instruments for The Th3rd World Studios was a comic book for Syracuse University. Outland Creative was hired to handle all the art chores for two short stories that would be collected into a single comic that would be handed out or sold at the various basketball events for Syracuse University. This was definitely a departure from the kind of work that we usually do and it was a fun assignment. I can't claim to know much about basketball, so it was certainly a little different for me. I grabbed Scott Godlewski to handle the pencils/inks and I did the colors. We were recently asked to do a new cover as well, and I tapped Brian Koschak to handle that. Here's a write up about the project along with a preview of

Polar Bear and Orphan Storyboard

Early last year we were approached by Neil Christopher from Inhabit Media to develop some storyboards for one of his animated projects. I am always very pleased to work with Neil - he's a great guy and very easy to work with. So he comes highly recommended. I immediately tapped my good friend (and amazing artist) Michael Hamlett to work on this. And I think he did a fantastic job with these boards. Check out some of the work below... Anyway, one of the tricks with this particular set of storyboards was that we had to be careful to keep all movement flowing from side to side. In order for this to be animated correctly and most easily, there couldn't be a lot of flow from front to back. It was definitely a fun and unique challenge. JM

New Fire Aztec RPG

For anybody that has been following Outland Creative over the last year, you know that we were involved a rather ambitious role-playing-game project called New Fire from Jason Caminsky. New Fire is a pencil-and-paper RPG set in a fictional world based on the myths, cultures, and geography of Precolumbian Mesoamerica. New Fire began as a Kickstarter project that we helped generate some artwork for. Fortunately, it was extremely successful and we had the opportunity to not only generate full color artwork for the entire book, but also handle a lot of the editing for the book as well. Lines by Andrew Krahnke. Colors by Ryan Lord. This was one of those projects that was a real joy to work on - Jason was extremely communicative as well as extremely good at providing very preci

Amazon Studios: Codex

To say that we've been busy this last year is an understatement. We've been very fortunate to have a number of different projects come to us that have kept us pretty busy. One of the more challenging, as well as more fun, is some work for Amazon Studios, which is the production side of Amazon. One of the things they are doing differently than other film production companies or movie studios is that they are doing a lot of visual development work up front. This is to help work out story kinks, test out movie and story ideas with the users at Amazon Studios and focus groups. We were tasked with creating some short-form, broad-stroke storyboards, called "miniboards." These basically illustrate the main beats of the story visually so it's easier for test audiences to digest the story, in

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones

One of the rather large projects that we've been working on for the last year is for The Th3rd World studios. They were working on the graphic novel adaptation of Cassandra Clare's best selling young adult novel series The Mortal Instruments and were looking for a colorist. Lines by Nicole Virella. Colors by Jeremy Mohler. I've known the guys over at The Th3rd World as acquaintances for quite a while, back when they used to host a forum on their site. They initially approached me about coloring the eight issues of the project earlier this year - Mike DeVito was very flattering about my color work when he approached me, going so far as to say that they even tried to approach the preview comic in sort of my style. His kind words worked, I was on board. Lines by Nicole Virella.

Bent’s Fort Project

One of the big, if not the biggest, project that we’ve worked on to date was for Richard Lewis Media Group (RLMG) developing an interactive exhibit for the History Colorado Museum in downtown Denver, Colorado. This has been one of the most involved and most rewarding projects that I’ve ever had the pleasure to work on. For one, I’ve always been interested in the American West and the whole culture that grew up around trapping and mountain men. Bent’s Fort was a situated in western Colorado and served as a meeting place for trappers, the US Military, Native Americans, traders, and various folks passing through on their way to the west. The men trapping in the Rockies used the fort as a place to trade and sell their catches and the US Military used the fort as a staging ground for

ZWEIHÄNDER RPG Illustration Thumbnail

ZWEIHÄNDER RPG Illustration

One of the many projects we've been working on for the past few months is a bunch of character illustration for an RPG book called ZWEIHÄNDER, by Daniel Fox. The book is a bit dark, in nature, and seems reminiscent of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Below is a little write up about the book - ZWEIHÄNDER Grim and Perilous is a dark fantasy role-playing game, designed with retroclone elements from the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay tabletop system. Set for release in autumn of 2012, ZWEIHÄNDER embraces the dark and gritty nature of old school RPGs of yore while simultaneously providing many modern advances found in today's roleplaying game industry. The finished product will be "world-agnostic", universally adaptable for any low or dark fantasy campaign with similar application principles as G

New Fire Kickstarter Success!

Hello folks! I just wanted to thank everybody that found their way over to the New Fire Kickstarter campaign and helped fund the project. Jason Caminsky is a great guy and his project is definitely something unique and different, especially in the RPG world. So, I'm excited that we'll have the opportunity to work on the project, not to mention do it in full color. Check out the piece below - Artwork by Alan Gallo. Colors by Jeremy D. Mohler. Anyway, we're down to the last day you can contribute and every little bit helps! I'll be posting more here as we get into the project and start to actually generate the work. Thanks! Jeremy D. Mohler

New Fire on Kickstarter!

Hey folks! I just wanted to take a moment to post about a project that Outland Entertainment is involved in called New Fire, created by Jason Caminsky. New Fire is a tabletop fantasy roleplaying/storytelling game inspired by the history and mythology of the Aztec-Mexica, the Maya, and the other great civilizations of Precolumbian Mesoamerica. It is really a very cool setting with a look and feel entirely different from a lot of the typical RPG settings. And I'm really excited to be heading the art development for this. We've got some really great artists lined up to work on it as well - Alan Gallo Chris Meeks Scott Godlewski In order to raise the funds for the art, we're running a Kickstarter Campaign. The majority of the funds from this will be going to ad
